The Melbourne International Wine Challenge

The Melbourne International Wine Challenge (MIWC) is the only major international wine competition in Asia Pacific Region to be judged solely by trade buyers.

Each wine is judged by its category and retail price. All participating judges have purchasing power through their stores, restaurants, distribution networks, which results in their ability to have a direct impact on brand sales.

What sets this competition apart from others is that the judges know the actual retail price of the wine they are judging and will the judge the wine as if they are buying it for their company. The wines are presented to the judges in their category as well as their price range. For example, the judges will be told that the wine they tasted is a “Cabernet Sauvignon 2009 or later” and whether it retails for $26 or $39.

All wines are judged in a blind tasting method and are sampled for appearance, aroma, taste, mouth feel, and finish. Each judging panel confers together to come to a unanimous decision. The judges make their decisions knowing that their peers (other trade buyers in the Asia Pacific Region and throughout the world) will also be making real buying decisions based upon the medals awarded at this particular competition.

Just an hour from Hobart, in the mystical Central Highlands of Tasmania, is historic Nant Estate (circa 1821). New World Whisky Distillery (Starward Whisky)

The original idea of New World Whisky Distillery was to create an organic brewery. But a chance meeting at a micro-distillery captured Dave’s imagination for whisky. This shortly led to a handshake agreement to return to Melbourne and start a new distillery with some local investors. That was 2004. As with most early stage start-ups, it has been a white-knuckle experience, but through determination and a certain amount of luck, New World Whisky Distillery has released its first world class premium malt whisky: Starward.

Redlands Distillery is one of two ‘paddock to bottle’ single malt whisky distilleries in the world (the other is Kilchoman in Scotland). They grow our own barley, draw our water from our 2km of Plenty River water frontage, steep and floor malt the barley and mash and distil in our circa 1857 granary building. A cooper prepares French oak barrels on site, and their whisky is left to mature in peace in our hop kiln. Redlands Distillery uses barrels sourced from local Tasmanian vineyards.

Craft Breweries in Australia

Craft Breweries in Australia

A List of Truly Unique Craft Beers in Australia.

It’s no secret – Australia has a wide variety of truly amazing beers. From the little wee ones to the big bad bullies, there are so many delicious brews to choose from it’s hard to know where to start.

We asked ourselves: Should we concentrate on the mass market or give our attention to the smaller boutique producers? Should we highlight those hard working craft brewers who deserve every little bit of exposure they get or should we try and list every single brewery from Adelaide to Zeehan?

Honestly, how do you choose? Sure – you’ve got your list of breweries that you stand proud and call your favourites, but what makes them so special?  We quickly realized it’s impossible to make everybody happy, so we decided to showcase those that service unique categories.

Below is a list of breweries, in no particular order, worth a mention because of their dedication to crafting beverages outside the norm.

Organic Beers

The Organic category has been around for some time and acts as a kind of pioneer in the natural and craft movements. Organic brewers use certified organic ingredients and keep their standards high. From the very beginning, they’ve been adamant about educating consumers about what it means to be drinking their libations. For these reasons alone, we salute them and their dedication to the craft. Here are a few organic beers to wet your palette.

Mountain Goat Beer Steam Ale

Mountain Goat Beer Steam Ale is a crisp, certified organic ale. They incorporate a slap of wheat malt in the grist make-up and ferment it cool and use Cascade and Citra hops to give it a fresh, zippy finish.

Mountain Goat remains 100% independent and is still led by its founders. There are around 25 full time staff and another 20 casuals.

The Organic Ale has an outstanding aroma of peach and citrus and is a sunset yellow pale gold. The beer starts with a fresh dose of sweet stone fruit which melts away in your mouth to a nice dry, clean citrus finish. A good healthy beer that can be enjoyed in moderation.

Wheat Free

For our coeliac friends, and those who like trying interesting new offerings that use alternative ingredients in brewing, we’ve added some stand-out wheat free beers. Next time you’re out looking for a new beer, why not pick up one of these?

O’Brian Beer

Rebellion Brewing’s has developed a process for malting the best gluten free grains for each of their beers and they’ve branded it O’Brian Beer.
They have also invested heavily in specialised equipment, most of which was designed externally and in some cases built by us. This equipment was required because the mashing process (the mixing of the malted grain and water at varying temperatures) for gluten free malted grain is significantly different than that for barley and wheat based beers.
The wort (raw sweet unfermented beer) is extracted from the mash using a mash filter, a unique piece of equipment that is not used in other microbreweries.

WILDE tastes like normal beer. It is a cloudy beer with live yeast, a residue is normal and can vary with age due to the natural, continuing, brewing processes in the bottle. Bottle-conditioned, WILDE is not filtered or pasteurized and is preservative free.

An unconventional category to include in Craft Beer, but there is certainly something extremely crafty about brewing mead, so we decided it was worth the roster spot.

Bee Mead

Bee Mead fermented for five weeks with wild yeasts and pure water from a natural sandstone spring running 30 metres beneath our Meadery. Additional honey is added after fermentation for natural sweetness and depth of flavour. The final product contains all the natural health-giving benefits of six teaspoons of honey per 500ml bottle.

Dennis of Mclaren Vale‘s recipe contains a special selection of spices, which make mead ideal for mulling. A popular practice in coaching inns of Olde-England, a red hot poker from the open fire was plunged into a tankard of mead to heat it, to warm the cockles of the hearts of weary travelers.
